Credit Card Shopping Online

The ability to shop online and make purchases with credit cards has some key benefits. Obviously, a main benefit is the convenience and ease afforded the consumer (this translates into increased revenue for companies, as well). In addition, all transactions will be easily monitored by using the monthly credit card statements. Not only this, but the consumer will also be protected under the Fair Credit Billing Act. This gives the consumer the right to dispute any unauthorized charges. If identity theft is suspected, credit card companies will typically reimburse for all unauthorized charges. Many will also give the consumer additional benefits such as warranties and return guarantees. In online shopping there are some important keys to remember to keep you and your credit safe.

1. Be careful about the sites at which you shop. Use well-known and trusted sites for secure online shopping. In choosing a site, pay attention to the site layout. Make sure it is a quality site with complete information. Take the time to read the return policies and the site contact information. It is a good idea to opt for a store that you already trust.

2. When you are transmitting your credit card and personal information online make sure that the online store you are using has security features in place. Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a security feature that encrypts your purchase information and will protect you from potential hackers.

3. Set the ALERTS (located under PREFERENCES/SECURITY) in your web browser to alert you when you are entering a page that is either secure or not secure, or when you may be submitting a form that is not secure. Often web browsers will use a symbol that looks like an unbroken lock or a key to tell you that you have a secure connection.

4. Always print out the confirmation record for your purchases. You need to have a copy of all information the online store gives you for reference. This will include a reference number and routing/tracking numbers for the shipment.

5. When selecting passwords to complete online shopping transactions, be sure that your password is unique and not shared with others. Avoid using an email address that spells out your entire name. Another option is to use a Post Office Box to further protect your privacy.

6. Often online stores use your contact email address (and sometimes even your billing or home address) for mailing campaigns. It is also common for online stores to sell your contact information to outside vendors and then your name will end up on mass mailing lists. Always look for opt-out boxes such as “do not contact me with future offers” that are usually present in an online transaction and check these boxes.
